ABOUT WALK 4 CMT

What is Walk 4 CMT?

Walk 4 CMT is an annual community-based nationwide fundraising event for the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) that has continued for more than a decade. These community events bring together the CMT community to raise awareness about Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), and to generate funds for research and patient programs. Participants across the country join in solidarity to walk, roll, or to support the cause, helping to make a significant difference in the lives of those who are affected by CMT.

Throughout its history, the CMTA has made significant strides in advancing our understanding of CMT and with improving the quality of life of those affected by this rare disease. The CMTA’s dedication to community support, treatment research and ultimately a cure continues to drive progress in the fight against CMT.

Walk 4 CMT plays a pivotal role in raising funds, spreading awareness, and fostering community and fellowship among individuals living with CMT and their loved ones. Together, they contribute to the ongoing mission of the CMTA: to find treatments and ultimately a cure for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease while working to improve the quality of life of those who are affected by this rare disease.

WHAT IS CMT?

What is CMT?

Named after the three doctors who first describe it in 1886: Charcot (shahr-KOH), Marie, and Tooth, CMT affects one out of every 2,500 people, including more than 125,000 in the US and more than 3 million worldwide. People who have CMT suffer lifelong progressive muscle weakness and atrophy of the feet/ankles, legs, arms, hands, and more. This leads to problems with balance, walking, hand use, and much more. There currently is no treatment or cure for this debilitating disease.
